Men's Sheepskin Jackets

A sheepskin jacket is one hide with the wool still on it. The leather faces out and takes the weather, the fleece faces in and holds your heat. That is the whole idea and nobody has improved on it since the 1930s.

Sheepskin, shearling and sheep leather are three different things

Three words, and people use them for each other constantly. Sheepskin is the hide with the wool attached. Shearling is sheepskin where the wool has been sheared to an even depth. A sheep leather jacket usually means the hide with the wool taken off, which is what most of our soft leather jackets are made from. If a jacket on this page has wool on the inside, the product page says so.

One piece sheepskin or a sheepskin lined jacket?

A sheepskin lined jacket is a leather shell with a separate fleece stitched inside it. A real sheepskin leather jacket is one piece. The one piece version is warmer, heavier and lasts a lot longer. It also costs more, and when the price of a mens sheepskin coat looks too good somewhere else, that is usually why.

Sheepskin coat. Longer, hip or thigh length, usually with a collar you can turn up. This is what most people picture when they say sheepskin coats for men, and the rest of the long ones are on our 3/4 length coats page.

Shearling collar jackets. An ordinary leather jacket with fleece only at the collar. Much less bulk and still warm where it counts. Several of them sit on the high collar page too.

Brown, black and grey sheepskin

Brown is the default. A mens brown sheepskin jacket goes with almost everything and hides wear well. A black sheepskin jacket is the smarter one and the only one that works over tailoring. Grey shearling has picked up a lot these last two years and is worth a look if you already own brown.

How a sheepskin jacket should fit

Sheepskin is thick before you add the wool, so these jackets take up more room than a plain leather one. Most men keep their usual size and layer a jumper underneath. Measure your chest over a jumper rather than a shirt and check it against the table on the product page.

Looking after real sheepskin

Keep it away from heat. No radiators and no tumble dryer. If it gets wet, hang it somewhere airy and let it dry on its own. Only use a cleaner who handles sheepskin, because an ordinary dry clean will ruin it.

Traditional, designer and bomber sheepskin

A men’s traditional sheepskin coat means the long, plain, button front one your grandfather would recognise. A mens designer shearling jacket usually means a shorter, sharper cut with visible stitching. Both are sheepskin underneath. The words describe the styling rather than the material.

A mens shearling bomber jacket or a sheepskin bomber jacket is the short version with a ribbed hem. It is the easiest of the three to wear day to day.
