The pattern comes from high altitude bomber crews, where the cabin was not heated. Everything about it exists for a reason. The collar is oversized so it closes over your ears when turned up. The belt pulls the hem tight so cold air cannot track up your back. The cut stops at the waist so it does not bunch when you are sitting.
