An original WW2 jacket, or made to the pattern?

Worth being plain about, because plenty of people search for an original WW2 sheepskin flying jacket. This is not an original from the war. It is a new jacket built to the same pattern, with the same heavy sheepskin and wool. That is usually what people actually want to wear, because an eighty year old original is a collector’s piece rather than a winter coat.

Flying, pilot or bomber jacket?

The same garment goes by all three. A sheepskin flying jacket, a pilot sheepskin jacket, a sheepskin pilot jacket or a wool pilot jacket. Bomber gets used too, after the crews who wore them. Whichever name you searched, this is that shape.

What it is made of

One hundred per cent sheepskin. The outside has a sealed leather finish, which helps it shrug off damp. Inside is the wool, roughly two to two and a half centimetres deep, and that depth is where the warmth comes from.

The collar and the belt

The collar folds down in the classic way. Turn it up and a buckle strap fastens it across your throat, which closes the gap where most cold gets in. A half buckle belt at the hem pulls the jacket in so wind cannot track up your back.

Zips, cuffs and pockets

A heavy duty zip in antiqued brass runs straight up the front. The cuffs have deep set zips along their full length, so they open wide to go over gloves. Slanted pockets sit at the waist. The shoulders are cut wide so you can move your arms freely.

Sizing

The fit is generous by design, so take your usual size rather than sizing up. There is room underneath for a jumper. Measure round the fullest part of your chest over that jumper and check the table on this page. Sizes run XS to 3XL.

Looking after sheepskin

Keep it away from direct heat, so no radiators and no tumble dryer. If it gets wet, hang it somewhere airy and let it dry on its own. Brush the wool back up at the collar and cuffs when it flattens. Use a cleaner who handles sheepskin.
