Lined Tin Cloth Cruiser Jacket in Brown

This is the warm one. Same cruiser pattern, same waxed cotton outer, but lined right through so it holds heat on the days the short lined version starts to feel thin. If you work outdoors or you are simply cold by nature, this is the version to buy.

This is our own jacket, cut to the classic cruiser pattern. It is not official Filson merchandise and we hold no licence with them.

Lined or short lined, which do you need?

The difference is how far the lining goes. Short lined stops partway and keeps the jacket light, which suits autumn and a mild winter. Fully lined carries insulation through the body and the sleeves, so it holds warmth in proper cold but sits heavier on you. If you are wearing it from November through February outdoors, take this one. If it is a general coat for the year, the short lined cruiser makes more sense.

What the tin cloth actually does

Waxed heavy duty cotton. Water beads and runs off instead of soaking in, and wind does not get through it. It is not waterproof in the way a technical shell is, and it does not claim to be. What it gives you instead is a jacket that survives being worked in for years and looks better for it.

Brown waxed cotton, and how it ages

A brown waxed jacket starts fairly even and does not stay that way. The wax lifts slightly at the elbows, the cuffs and the pocket edges, and those lighter marks are the point rather than a fault. If you want it uniform again, a rewax brings the colour back. Some people never bother. If you searched for a tan or a dark brown waxed jacket, this shade covers both depending on the light.

The pockets, which are the useful part

Four pockets across the front, cut deep enough to be worth using. Across the back there is a full width pocket you can reach into from either side. That one came from the original forestry jackets, where it carried folded maps. It still takes gloves, a hat or anything flat.

Sizing, and layering under it

This one is worn over layers, so size for what goes underneath. Measure round the fullest part of your chest over a jumper. Waxed cotton does not stretch, so there is no breaking it in the way leather breaks in. Check the table on this page. Sizes run XS to 3XL.

Looking after it

Never machine wash it. Let mud dry and brush it off. Cold water and a cloth for everything else. Rewax it once a year and more often if it lives outdoors. Keep it away from direct heat while it dries.
