Men's Suede Leather Jackets

A mens suede jacket is leather with the grain sanded down. That sanding leaves a soft nap, which is why suede looks matt and slightly fuzzy where ordinary leather looks polished. It also makes the jacket feel more relaxed. Over a shirt in October a suede jacket works. A heavy biker jacket at the same time of year is too much.

Real suede and suedette are not the same thing

Most cheap suede jackets are not suede at all. They are suedette, which is brushed polyester made to look like it. In a photo you cannot tell. In your hand you can, straight away. Every suede leather jacket in this category is the real thing. On the odd occasion we sell something faux, the product page says faux.

The men’s suede jackets we make

Suede bomber. Ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, boxy through the body. Easiest one to wear and the one we shift most of. The leather version sits in our bomber jackets.

Suede biker jacket. Same asymmetric zip you get on a leather moto jacket, but softer, so you do not look like you have just come off a bike. The brown suede biker is the one most men go for.

Brown, black, grey and olive suede

A dark brown suede jacket is what most men ask for, and chocolate holds its colour longest. Tan and camel look better but they mark sooner, so only buy one if you will actually look after it. Olive goes with denim in a way brown does not. A black suede jacket looks far softer than black leather, and grey suede is the one people are surprised by once they try it on.

When to wear a suede jacket

September through to late October, then again from March. Suede is not a winter coat. If you need something for January, get a sheepskin or a sheepskin flying jacket instead.

Suede and rain

They do not get on. Better you hear that now than after you have bought one. A light shower will not ruin anything. Hang the jacket somewhere airy, let it dry on its own, then bring the nap back up with a suede brush. Give it a protector spray before you wear it the first time. Keep it well away from the radiator.

What size suede jacket to buy

Suede gives a bit more than smooth leather, but not enough to size down for. Measure your chest at the fullest point over a shirt and check it against the table on the product page. Going up a size is the safer mistake to make.
